National Health Action Eastleigh candidate comments on NHS investigation into 14 hospitals

The National Health Action Party candidate for Eastleigh Dr Iain Maclennan  says the NHS investigation into high death rates at 14 hospitals must examine all the factors which impact on quality of patient care.

.

Dr Maclennan, a public health expert and former navy medical officer, said:

"It's crucial that the high death rates at these hospitals are looked at to see if there are underlying problems to address. We do need a review that will be open and thorough enough to take in all the factors that influence levels of care and patient outcomes.”

.

 He added:

“We also firmly believe that the massive cutbacks and cost savings now being imposed on the NHS, combined with the implementation of the very divisive and destabilising Health and Social Care Act, are making good quality patient care much harder to achieve."

.

The by-election campaign takes place in the shadow of the horrific revelations from Mid Staffordshire Hospitals, which underline the consequences of an NHS in which management attention is increasingly focused on balance sheets rather than patient care – a situation that will worsen when the coalition government’s Health & Social Care Act takes effect from April.

.

Dr Maclennan, aged 54, lives in Bursledon, in the borough of Eastleigh. He has just retired from the NHS after serving as a GP for some years and more recently as a consultant in public health with the local Hampshire Primary Care Trust. He also served 10 years in the Royal Navy.
